When dog doing it reliably, start fading treat – do same motion with empty hand (becomes the hand signal) and treat with other hand once dog is standing. Then try with you standing short distance in front of dog. Beware, dog will naturally want to walk towards you once it is standing so need to immediately give “Stay” hand signal to keep dog in place after it stands up eg. “Stand…Stay! Good dog!” BUT Stand is quite advanced – hard for pups without lure. Stand Stay even harder!

I taught Honey Stand before I used clicker – I just had her in a Sit and held a treat in front of her nose (standing next to her) and then slid my hand in front of her slightly – as she tried to follow the treat, she would automatically stand up. I would say “Stand” as she was rising up. Don’t move hand out too far otherwise dog walks forward. Just enough in front to make them stand up and then stop to prevent them walking. Feed in stand position + praise. Ask dog to Sit and repeat.

Honey is great! We need to teach our puppy a stand-stay for grading as well. He can do an okay sit-stay and drop-stay but he just can’t get the hang of ‘stand’ let alone a stand-stay. Any advice on teaching this command? We have started clicker training.

Honey is so well behaved. My yoko wouldn’t last that, especially if she saw a bird. Lucky wouldn’t either, if there is food he follows.

I can’t find the Doggie Jammas site via web search. What exactly is their url? I think it would be so helpful for my 11yr old Dalmatian.

@AntiCelebritynet – it’s actually a “dog pyjama”, very soft & stretchy – made of polar fleece – it’s from an Australian company called “Doggie Jammas” – you can find them online
