Dog Training Tutorial: Building Eye Contact & Attention!

Teaching a dog to make eye contact is extremely useful with a variety of applications. It is a good habit to encourage especially in puppies who often have the tendency to be rambunctious, particularly in the presence of delicious food/treats. Use this exercise to help build their focus & attention while demonstrating that rewards in their environment are unlocked through you. Ideally, we should always establish eye contact before giving them any obedience cue. This is also a great exercise for anybody that is new to clicker training. It can be a little challenging at first to time your clicks and deliver the food rewards perfectly, so this is a good place to start and develop your skill. Be sure to repeat each step outlined in this video several times before raising the criteria and moving on to the next one. Some dogs are more persistent and require extra patience before they start to offer eye contact. This is where clicker training is awesome because it allows us to mark the exact millisecond when the desired behavior happens thus making it very easy for the dog to understand & learn. Always use high-value food rewards & always reward after each click so that it does not lose value. Finally, food rewards should be understood as a stepping stone to teaching something. This means that eventually, there is no need to reward your dog with food every time as they learn to offer the behavior by default. Thank you for watching!

I can tell you MY thoughts =) Do it. I did it to mine. I got a one year old male dog from the shelter. He is so much more relaxed since i got him fixed. We can walk in a group of dogs in heat and he doesnt even care. So much more joyful and fun since then.

You should google clicker training some time. It’s great if you do it right. Clicker training is precise and non-emotional, which means no talking unless you train the cue. Dogs can learn 20 times as fast. I just started today. My dog is 2 years old now but we made greater progress than ever.

No you dont really need a clicker… BUT! A clicker is a great tool for the novice dog trainer! Its more for the trainers sake than the dogs sake really…

Kelly Torode says:

notice also he is in a small room and not many decorations or “things” in the room yard is also very clean and is natural no toys etc

Kelly Torode says:

take a second look- see if there are any other distractions in the room or are.a i find my husky even if were inside or outside if shes distracted shes not going to do anything. i have other animals& found when i try to train her if they are out she looks at them more then me so i train her w/out distractions&animals. i watch a lot of cesar millan as well he says exercise discipline affection try exercise w/your dog first-long walk etc

Dont buy one. Here is what i did, get a jar lid, use the nadle of a screwdriver or something else hard and hit it on the back of the lid so it pops out more on the top.Now when you press it it will click just like a clicker. But if you’d rather buy one than they have them at petstores like petsmart.

i know, but in a few days my dog learned his name and lot other tricks and i didn’t used clicker :D

threelittledoves says:

You don’t have to use a clicker, you can use a verbal cue or any other noise as well. Just be careful that the noise you choose is distinct and only happens when you’re trying to train and have rewards on hand. The noise won’t mean anything if it happens all the time for no reason at all and is only sometimes accompanied by a reward. Consistency is key. A clicker device is nice because it always makes the same noise, and its distinct.

DavidTheBeast Ortiz says:

Clickers are used to train. You click and reward immediately after the action is performed correctly. You dont need the clicker AFTER the dog knows the command very well and performs accordingly. It takes time, patience and a good reward based training to get to that point where you dont need the clicker

Linda Eltringham says:

Really like your videos. Liked the way you put your food hand in your lap, but requiring your dog to focus on your face.

do i really need clicker ? i have to have it every time i want from my dog to do something or only for training ?

turevus says:

Do you think the vocabulary that you can teach a Shepherd is relatively larger / more complex than breeds like Huskies or Labradors?

Terri Kim says:

The click is conditioning the dog to understand when they did something right. Instead of relying on “GOOD BOY!” which people have tendencies to change the tone of their voice, or say different words (“yes”, “good job”, “good baby”, “good [name]“, etc) — that way, they are accustom to hearing one consistent sound when they do the right thing. And that’s also when they get the treat.

Terri Kim says:

You can get one at any pet store. Ask for a dog training clicker.

LadySmartcat says:

maybe teach him to sit first and keep him in the ‘sit’ while you try the they eye contact. remember this isn’t normal behavior for a dog, eye contact to them can often mean “I challenge you” in doggy language. If you have a really submissive dog like mine, he won’t look you in the eyes if you’re look at him in the eyes. try looking at his ears or his nose. Hope this helps
